The “Pięć Stron Świata” (“Five Corners of the World”) ensemble was founded at the Faculty of Modern Languages in 2017 on the initiative of Maciej Karpiński, who has since continuously expanded its membership to include new members who work and study at other faculties as well. The band’s lineup changes, but what remains constant is their passion for music and the joy of discovering it through cultures from around the world. Often, it is also the joy of discovering talents that had previously been kept hidden.
The music performed by “Pięć Stron Świata” is a colorful tapestry woven from diverse musical traditions, where folk melodies from India, Latvia, Spain, Bolivia, Japan, and North Africa blend with the blues and the “obereks” and “mazurkas” (polish folk dances) so dear to us. It is also a dynamic blend of temperaments, to which each member contributes new repertoire suggestions from “their” corner of the world.
The group’s formation is linked to the Cultural Diversity Day, which has been celebrated at the Faculty of Modern Languages since 2016. Since the group’s inception, its concerts have been the highlight of this event. These concerts have taken place at various venues in Poznań, including the Zamek Cultural Center, Nowa Gazownia, the Adam Mickiewicz University Botanical Garden, Mickiewicz Square (during the 100th anniversary celebrations of Adam Mickiewicz University), and at their home base, Collegium Novum. The group has also performed at “CEGLARNIA” with the “Consensus” Choir from the Książ Wielkopolski Cultural Center, at the Cuentacuentos festival at the Dragon club, and in a concert celebrating International Music Day at the Zamek Cultural Center.
The members of “Pięć Stron Świata” speak dozens of languages in total, and the result of this polyphony is a harmonious sound that proves that even distant cultures can come together around a shared table.
