The university Buchaechum dance group was founded in 2008. The group comprises students of Korean philology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. At their weekly rehearsals, they create their own choreography, drawing inspiration from professional dance groups and developing their own movements. Although the group’s line-up has changed over the years, thanks to the experience they have accumulated and the knowledge passed down, they have continued their work and strive to constantly improve their performances. The dancers have performed at events including the “Korea Festival” in Warsaw, the “Pyrkon” Fantasy Festival and “K-Expo 2023” in Paris.
The Korean fan dance Buchaechum derives from shamanic dances and traditional court dance from the Joseon Dynasty. It is most often performed by larger groups of dancers dressed in traditional costumes, known as hanbok. Using fans held in their hands, the dancers perform movements inspired by nature – flowers, butterflies and waves. Their graceful movements blend perfectly with the music, showcasing one of the most beautiful aspects of traditional Korean culture.
