The University Choir of Pécs was founded in 1997. Its legal predecessor, the Mixed Choir of the Teacher Training College of Pécs was led by Aurél Tillai, holder of the Liszt Prize and winner of the 1st prize at international competitions such as Arezzo, Gorizia, the Debrecen Choir Competition or BBC’s Let the Peoples Sing. Since September 2014 the leader of the choir is Liszt-award winner and Hungarian Heritage Prize holder conductor Prof. Dr. Tamás Lakner.

In December 2014 the choir performed Handel’s Messiah in Pécs and in Croatia. In May 2015 they won 1st prize at the International Competition of University Choirs in Banska Bystrica, Slovakia and gold medal in 2016 at the Neerpelt European Youth Music Festival in Belgium.

The choir was the proud host and official choir of the 19th Europa Cantat held between 24 July and 2 August 2015 in Pécs. The ensemble is experienced in presenting contemporary music pieces; for example, in 2017 they had two oratorio performances held in Pécs and Budapest.

The University Choir of Pécs had the opportunity to tour in 2017 for 2 weeks in China. Besides concerts they also held masterclasses in several cities throughout the country, organized and hosted by: Jinjiang University, University of Taiyuan, Education Directorate of Beijing and Qing Hua University Beijing, among others.

In July 2018 they were special guests of the 14th China International Chorus Festival where they held several shows. In October 2018 the choir gave a concert in the world-renowned Musikvereinssaal in Vienna, performing Brahms’s German Requiem. Last December the ensemble performed in the Opening Concert of the Zagreb Christmas Music Festival in Croatia.

Prof. dr hab. Tamás Lakner, dziekan Wydziału Muzyki i Sztuk Wizualnych Uniwersytetu w Peczu, studiował dyrygenturę chóralną na Akademii Ferenca Liszta w Budapeszcie. Jego praca doktorska była poświęcona literaturze chóralnej dla dzieci po śmierci Zoltana Kodálya. Obecnie jest profesorem dyrygentury chóralnej na Uniwersytecie w Peczu, gdzie uczy metody Kodálya i dyrygentury chóralnej. Prowadząc chór męski Béla Bartók, Chór Uniwersytetu w Peczu i zespół Bach Vocal Ensemble, zdobył łącznie 63 nagrody na różnych międzynarodowych konkursach chóralnych.

Chór męski Béla Bartók ma w swoim dorobku kilka nagrań płytowych, w tym m.in. płyta „Zoltán Kodály – utwory chóralne na głosy męskie (wydanie kompletne)”, będąca światową premierą wydawnictwa Hungaroton Classic. Tamás Lakner bardzo często jest zapraszany do zasiadania w jury konkursów chóralnych oraz do prowadzenia warsztatów na międzynarodowych festiwalach chóralnych. Jego wykłady dla zagranicznych uczelni obejmują szeroki zakres tematów, takich jak: „Nowoczesność Kodályowskiej pedagogiki muzycznej” (Uniwersytet Columbia w Kanadzie), „Spójność i związek sztuki chóralnej z pedagogiką Kodálya” (Uniwersytet San Jose w Mendozie, Argentyna), „Rozwój osobowości poprzez sztukę chóralną Kodálya” (Uniwersytet Konstantyna Filozofa w Nitrze, Słowacja) czy też „Kompozycje Kodálya na chóry męskie” (Amerykańskie Stowarzyszenie Dyrygentów Chóralnych, Uniwersytet Beihang w Pekinie, Uniwersytet Sao Paolo w Brazylii).

Oprócz wielu innych nagród, takich jak Nagroda Artisjus i Nagroda dla Dyrygentów Związku Węgierskich Chórów i Orkiestr, prof. Lakner został uhonorowany pamiątkową tabliczką im. Béli Bartóka i nagrodą Liszta – najwyższymi odznaczeniami dla muzyków chóralnych na Węgrzech. Jest również laureatem Nagrody Dziedzictwa Węgier i założycielem oraz dyrektorem artystycznym festiwali Pécs Cantat i European Convivial Wine Song Festival. Jest członkiem Komitetu Artystycznego XIV Międzynarodowego Festiwalu Chóralnego w Chinach.

Prof. Dr. Tamás Lakner, dean of the Faculty of Music and Visual Arts of the University of Pécs, studied choir conducting in Budapest at Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music. His DLA thesis was dedicated to the post-Kodályian children's choir literature in Hungary. Currently he is professor of choral conducting at the University of Pécs, teaching Kodály method and choral conducting. With the Béla Bartók male choir, the University Choir of Pécs and the Bach Vocal Ensemble he has won 63 prizes at different international choir competitions.

Béla Bartók Male Choir has several recordings, including: Zoltán Kodály – Choral Works for Male Voices (complete), a world premiere by Hungaroton Classic. Tamás Lakner is a sought-after jury member and popular workshop-leader at international choral events. His lectures abroad cover a broad range of choral topics, such as, „the modernity of Kodály's music pedagogy” (University of Columbia of Canada), „Coherence and relationship between the choral art and pedagogy of Kodály” (San Jose University of Mendoza, Argentina) ”Development of the personality through the choral art of Kodály”(Konstantin University, Nitra, Slovakia), „Kodály compositions for male choirs” (ACDA, Minneapolis, USA and Beihang University, Beijing, China, Sao Paolo University, Brazil).

In addition to other local and national level acknowledgements, such as the Artisjus Award and the Conductors’ Prize of the Hungarian Choirs and Orchestras Alliance, Tamás Lakner is decorated with Bartók Memorial Plaquette and Liszt-award, the highest recognitions for choral musicians in Hungary. He is holder of the Hungarian Heritage Prize and founder as well as artistic director of the Pécs Cantat and European Convivial Wine Song festivals.He is member of the Arts Committee of the 14th China International Chorus Festival

 

Dr. Péter HOPPÁL (DLA, MBA) is an assistant professor of music at the University of Pécs, Faculty of Music and Visual Arts in Pécs, Hungary. He has been teaching conductor students since 2017. He is former Minister of State for Culture of the Republic of Hungary at the Ministry of Human Capacities, Budapest, Hungary between 2014 and 2018.
