The University of Guayaquil Choir, founded in 1972 by professor Enrique Gil Calderon (†), is an institution dedicated to improving the musical culture of all citizens, featuring and cherishing different cultural traditions, and contributing to the dissemination of national and universal musical values. Their repertoire is based on Latin American music of 20th and 21st century composers as well as popular and folk compositions.
Currently, the choir is directed by Fernando Gil Estrada, Professor of Fine Arts with a specialisation in choral conducting. He is also the director of the Music Institute at the University of Guayaquil. He has taught workshops on Ecuador and Latin American music in Europe and South America. He is director general of the DIDECOR Foundation, which organises the annual International Choral Festival El Canto Coral Hermana a los Pueblos, 'Choral Music Unites Nations'.
